The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin by: Margaret Wise Brown 2003 Picture and Easy Books for the Younger Set--Halloween, Ghost Stories, and Other Spooky Works

This story is about a pumpkin as it grows and all it hopes to be. When he grows up he wants to scare the field mice out of the field like the scarecrow. He wanted a ferocious face like the scarecrow but he stayed smooth. Then the weather starts to cool. The scarecrow is busy scaring the birds away because the sky is full of them. The first frost came and the pumpkin turned the color of the sun! Three children came by the pumpkin and took him home. They cleaned the pumpkin and began to carve him.. They gave him eyes, a nose in the shape of a witch's hat and a mouth with zigzag teeth. The pumpkin was proud of what he had become. He was certain to scare the field mouse now. And he did!
